of the best mountain scenery and so called Virgin Beauty of unexplored
world, the world that is yet to be explored by the West.
The town has two or three interesting sights. Two miles out of town
there are a pair of Buddha's carved in to a high rock. They go back
to the 5-th century. It's a nice hike, the scenery on your way is
gorgeous. Then there is a monument to commemorate the fact that the
boyscouts of Gilgit were the spark that set the flame in the battle
between Pakistan and India for supremacy over Kashmir.

| FOOTSTEPS
OF ST. GREGORY |
| DAY
08
|
Departure to Khanjrab National Park Via Sost . Sight
seeing at Khanjrab National Park and night stay at Gulmit
FOOTSTEPS
OF ST GREGORY:
One of the great engineering wonders of the 20th century, the Karakoram
Highway winds its way up to the Khunjerab National Park, located
high up in the Karakoram Mountains on the border with China. The
rugged wildness of Khunjerab begins after Sost, the last border
town of the Hunza Valley, and the landscape on both sides of the
Karakoram Highway becomes increasingly dramatic as the towering
peaks close in onto the Khunjerab Valley. Starting from Sost, the
narrow valley ends at the Khunjerab Pass, which at 15,500 feet is
the highest border crossing in the world.
The Khunjerab National Park covers about 2,270 square kilometres.
With its snow-capped mountains, glaciers, alpine pastures and gorges,
the park is home to endangered species like the Marco Polo Sheep,
the Blue Sheep, the Himalayan Brown Bear and the Snow Leopard. The
park’s many alpine pastures are also used by local villagers
for the summer grazing of their domestic livestock, upon whom they
depend for their livelihood. It is this competition between the
villagers and the wildlife for the use of the park’s natural
resources that lies at the heart of a conflict that has riddled
the park. In response to this crisis, an innovative and realistic
management plan for the park has been formulated, in recent years,
at the behest of the WWF Pakistan. The plan was developed as a result
of comprehensive consultations with the community. In the years
to come, if the plan is fully implemented, the Khunjerab National
Park would be turned into a model national park. |
